About Dr. Wasser’s Pedagogy

Why do we want to learn?

Dr. Wasser believes that every learner can develop a desire to continue learning about a topic if they understand the importance of obtaining additional knowledge. In doing so, each student establishes a framework or schema which allows for new insights into the world around the learner. Pursuing deep and broad knowledge in multiple disciplines enables learners to make unique and necessary connections that exceed the knowledge of a single topic. Dr. Wasser accompanies each learner in this pursuit, where preconceived notions are addressed, existing understanding is refined and expertise is increased.

Expertise in the disciplines he teaches makes Dr. Wasser a living knowledge base and his ability to guide learners in their connection to the material makes him an excellent educator. Like any physiologist, Dr. Wasser understands how the body functions and the role of the different organ systems in maintaining what is called “homeostasis,” the condition of wellness, as opposed to being ill. As a historian of medicine, art and culture, not only does Dr. Wasser have a deep understanding of world history, but also, he is conversant with the role an understanding of history plays in a person’s ability to understand the present and plan for the future. Dr. Wasser makes available to every learner what the Germans call, Bildung. Bildung translates as “education,” but culturally, it means far more. To have Bildung means to have a base knowledge in a broad array of divergent disciplines spanning the humanities, arts and sciences. The state of having Bildung is to have a cosmopolitan or international outlook and perspective. Dr. Wasser’s pedagogy encourages learners to achieve the state of Bildung which includes an appreciation for the differences and similarities among different people and cultures and to understand the importance of such differences and similarities.
